Fuel Cost Calculator guide

Estimate fuel quantity, total trip cost, and cost per kilometer or mile using metric or US efficiency units.

What this tool does

The Fuel Cost Calculator supports metric consumption in liters per 100 kilometers and US efficiency in miles per gallon. Metric mode multiplies trip distance by consumption and divides by 100. US mode divides miles by MPG. The resulting liters or gallons are multiplied by the entered price per unit.

A round-trip option doubles the entered one-way distance before fuel and cost are calculated. The result shows total distance, estimated fuel quantity, total cost, and cost per kilometer or mile.

Currency selection controls display formatting only and does not retrieve fuel prices or exchange rates. Enter price per liter in metric mode and price per US gallon in US mode. Imperial gallons are different from US gallons and are not supported by this calculation.

How to use it

  1. Choose metric or US units.
  2. Enter the one-way distance.
  3. Enter vehicle consumption in L/100 km or efficiency in MPG.
  4. Enter current fuel price per liter or US gallon.
  5. Enable round trip if needed, choose currency, and calculate.

Use a realistic efficiency value from recent driving under similar conditions. A manufacturer test figure may differ from traffic, weather, vehicle load, road grade, speed, tires, heating, and air conditioning.

Benefits

  • Supports L/100 km and US MPG workflows
  • Calculates one-way or round-trip distance
  • Reports fuel quantity and total cost
  • Shows normalized cost per kilometer or mile
  • Runs locally without collecting trip information

Improving the estimate

Map distance can differ from the route actually driven, especially with detours, local travel, parking searches, and optional stops. Add an appropriate distance margin when plans are uncertain. For a multi-vehicle trip, calculate each vehicle separately because consumption and fuel type can differ.

This estimate covers fuel only. Tolls, parking, charging, maintenance, depreciation, rental fees, insurance, taxes, and time are not included. Hybrid behavior and electric-only segments can make one fixed fuel-efficiency value less representative.

Practical notice: This result is a planning estimate, not financial, travel, safety, or vehicle advice. Actual consumption and prices vary; maintain adequate fuel and follow vehicle and route guidance.
