Running Pace Calculator guide
Convert distance and elapsed time into average pace per kilometer, pace per mile, and average speed.
What this tool does
The Pace Calculator divides total elapsed seconds by distance to determine average pace. It converts kilometers and miles using the fixed relationship of one mile to 1.609344 kilometers. Results include minutes and seconds per kilometer, minutes and seconds per mile, kilometers per hour, and miles per hour.
The time fields are combined as entered, so 90 minutes is accepted as 5,400 seconds rather than rejected for exceeding 59. This makes it easy to enter a long event without manually carrying hours. The displayed pace rounds to the nearest second, while speed displays two decimal places.
This is an average over the complete entered time. It does not analyze splits, moving time, elevation, heart rate, effort, weather, rest stops, or GPS quality. A watch and race course can report slightly different distances, and small distance changes can noticeably affect pace.
How to use it
- Enter a positive distance.
- Choose kilometers or miles for that distance.
- Enter elapsed hours, minutes, and seconds.
- Select Calculate pace.
- Review both unit systems and average-speed results.
Use official course distance and elapsed time when comparing event results. For training, decide consistently whether pauses are included. Do not compare moving-time pace from one activity with elapsed-time pace from another without noting the difference.
Use the Time Duration Calculator for a start-to-end timestamp interval. The Unit Converter can convert a separate length measurement before you enter the distance.
Benefits
- Converts pace between kilometers and miles
- Reports average speed in metric and imperial units
- Accepts flexible non-negative time fields
- Uses a precise distance conversion constant
- States rounding and measurement limits
- Performs all arithmetic locally
Training and safety context
Pace alone does not measure fitness, health, fatigue, or safe effort. Terrain, temperature, altitude, hydration, sleep, injury, disability, and individual experience all matter. Use appropriate professional guidance for training plans, symptoms, recovery, or medical concerns. Stop activity and seek suitable help for warning signs rather than relying on a browser result.
Practical notice: This calculator provides an arithmetic conversion, not medical, coaching, or safety advice.
